The most valuable resource for an artist is time. But paid time to spend making art isn't something that our culture values, even if we value the work we see. As a self-producing, full-time artist, I work most with the details of creating community through performance, not on the art. I'm emailing, calling, making relationships with colleges and theaters and other artists, writing grants, organizing community talks with total strangers in far-off cities, sending out press kits, booking travel, following up with presenters to make sure I did as good a job as I wanted to.... There's very little time to spend writing and rehearsing, or learning and trying out new skills—which is just as vital to the work you see as organizing those shows and community events.
